Equalization techniques

Although we learn some techniques to equalize our ears, there are many other ways to do so and you can choose whatever feels better for you. Here are some:

VALSALVA MANEUVER: This is the most common method divers learn. Pinch your nose and gently blow through your nose.

TOYNBEE MANEUVER: Swallow while your nose is pinched.

LOWREY TECHNIQUE: A combination of Valsalva and Toynbee applied at the same time.

EDMONDS TECHNIQUE: While tensing the soft tissue at the back of the roof of your mouth, throat muscles and pushing the jaw forward and down, do a Valsalva maneuver.

FRENZEL MANEUVER: Pinch your nose and close the back of your throat as if straining to lift a weight. Then make the sound of the letter “K.”

Just remember, if you are felling discomfort while descending, there must be something wrong so discontinue your descent, go shallower and try to equalize again.

I hope that could help and enjoy your dives.
